Recently Placed Work

Geoffrey Johnson's painting Parlor sits beautifully in my client's sophisticated San Francisco dining room. The chartreuse wall sets the stage for an elegantly composed interior scene with hints of a narrative and a bit of mystery too. I love the voyeuristic and cinematic quality of Johnson's work.

Artist to Watch

Rania Matar's work focuses on girls and women. As a Lebanese-born American woman and mother, her cultural background, cross-cultural experience, and personal narrative informs her photography. She has dedicated her work to exploring both sides of identity: addressing issues of personal and collective identity, through photographs mining female adolescence and womanhood.

In 2018, Matar was named a
Guggenheim Fellow. Appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise, Matar was chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants in the Foundation's ninety-fourth competition.

Gallery to Visit

Robert Klein Gallery was established in 1980 and ranks among the world's most prestigious showrooms of fine art photography. The Gallery maintains an extensive and ever-changing inventory of 19th century, 20th century, and contemporary photographs. An important institution for showing photography in Boston, Robert Klein Gallery has shown important early exhibitions of Diane Arbus, Annie Leibovitz, Sally Mann, and Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Studio Visit
Visiting Joe Wardwell in his studio is like taking a mini course in Art History. This is no surprise given that he teaches the subject at Brandeis University and incorporates many art historical traditions into his practice. In addition to learning more from Joe about his practice, we were lucky to enjoy a large commission that was leaving the studio for its new home that day. What was particularly interesting to me was getting a chance to see earlier works across multiple different mediums (painting, works on paper, sketches and source material). The impact of the Hudson River School, Hard Edge Abstractions, stencil graffiti, wood block printing and poster design is evident in Wardwell's work. What became clear is how he brings decades of time and lived experiences into each work by adding layers and references across music, literature and pop culture.
Jason Middlebrook cocktail reception
LaMontange Gallery + Powell Fine Art Advisory
Please join me Thursday, July 18th from 6:00-8:00 pm at LaMontagne Gallery for a special viewing and conversation around Jason Middlebrook's current exhibition. Middlebrook transforms trees into wooden planks and then paints geometric patterns on the flat surface. This slice of wood becomes the medium on which Middlebrook investigates human's relationship with nature.
