October 2019

We traveled to Napa Valley last month for a long weekend to celebrate a family wedding. Always eager to see the local art community, we enjoyed time in St. Helena, where we visited Caldwell Snyder Gallery (profiled below) and Hall Wines. The trip made an impact and has stayed in my mind. As you walk into the impressive glass and concrete building at Hall, you are met with a massive, imposing even, Nick Cave tondo to the left of the front desk. Made of found beaded and sequined clothing, "Garden Plot" is sparkling and dynamic. It is a sea of pattern, color and texture, causing every visitor walking in the building to pause, get closer and take a look. I imagine that many visitors were not expecting such an incredible collection of contemporary art in addition to the new world Cabs, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. These unexpected moments are what makes art so powerful and important. It presents new ideas and ways of thinking and seeing. I continue to feel so grateful that I get to spend my days thinking about art and how I can introduce more of you to it.

Gallery to Visit
Founded by Oliver Caldwell and Susan Snyder in San Francisco in 1983, Caldwell Snyder is a contemporary gallery with international reach. Representing a roster of over 50 artists from the United States, Europe and Latin America, they focus on innovative painting and sculpture. Be sure to check out painters Kenton Nelson, Gregory Kondos, Ross Penhall and Siddharth Parasnis and sculptor Francois du Plessis.
Artist to Watch

Crystalle Lacouture's abstract paintings are inspired by textiles and the memories of places and experiences from her childhood. Though loosely built on an underlying grid-like structure, they expand to suggest three dimensional weavings that exist in a shallow space filled with crisscrossing threads and dove-tailed shapes. The viewer is aware of the artist's hand in her rough-edged forms and loosely applied paint, and of her presence as she guides us into the dreamlike webs/worlds. Grounded in the landscape, Lacouture has said "My work is about landscapes and feelings about landscapes. I find inspiration in textiles, words, music, and the changing shapes and colors of nature. My paintings investigate huge things reduced to microcosms and small things blown up for closer inspection."

Lacouture received a degree in Painting/Printmaking from Skidmore College and then moved to Brooklyn, NY where she lived for 10 years, making art and working for the political/feminist artists Leon Golub and Nancy Spero and the installation artist Phoebe Washburn. Now living outside of Boston and in the Berkshires, she has a full-time studio practice and is co-Director of Art Programming at Tourists Hotel in North Adam, MA.

Studio Visit
Carly Glovinski makes paintings, sculpture, and works on paper that often teeter between representation and abstraction. Rooted in observation and inspired by an interest in handicraft techniques and processes, her interest in everyday household objects and recognizable geometric patterns are seen throughout her body of work. Glovinski received her BFA from Boston University in 2003 and is represented by Morgan Lehman Gallery in New York, NY. She has been awarded residencies at the Studios at MASS MoCA (North Adams, MA); Teton ArtLab (Jackson, WY); and the Vermont Studio Center.

Glovinski's work will be included in the upcoming exhibition celebrating the Massachusetts State Committee for the National Museum of Women in the Arts (MA-NMWA)nominees for Women to Watch: Paper Routes at Gallery Kayafas in Boston, MA.
Keeping your artwork safe
A few helpful and friendly reminders when caring for your collection
  • Lighting: remember that direct sunlight or artificially generated light may cause the artwork (especially works on paper) to deteriorate over time. Ensure that you use proper artificial lighting and frame pieces under UV-protective glazing, when possible.
  • Temperature:  the ideal indoor temperature to maintain is 69-75 degrees Fahrenheit (21-24 degrees Celsius).
  • Location: avoid displaying artwork where there is busy human traffic or at blind corners. Sculptures displayed outdoors should be able to withstand the weather and harsh elements and maintain a regular maintenance or cleaning schedule.
  • Installation: use the right tools and ensure that the wall can bear the weight of the artwork. Double check that all wires are new and tightly secured. If unsure, hire a professional art installer.
Upcoming Exhibitions & Events

Special Exhibitions
  • Paper Routes / Women to Watch 2020, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C. The sixth installment in this exhibition series will focus on the transformation of paper into complex works of art. Paper is a ubiquitous medium that is made from a variety of materials, and the artists represented by the national and international committees in Women to Watch will exemplify this variety of production. Women to Watch 2020 demonstrates that paper is not always the overlooked support for drawings, prints and photographs, but instead a medium in and of itself. Lisa Tung, Executive Director of the MassArt Art Museum, has selected the short list of Massachusetts artists: Elizabeth Alexander, Carly Glovinski, Tomashi Jackson and Youjin Moon. The exhibition of their work will be held at Gallery Kayafas, October 19-26, 2019.
